LARA Hip Flask

In the world of design, inspiration can strike from the most unexpected places. For me, it was a series of small water drops that sparked an idea, leading to the creation of a new design that combines functionality with elegance.

The product idea was to design a hip flask. I wanted this modern hip flask to be not only a beautiful accessory but also a practical and versatile tool for anyone on the go. The curves of the flask should provide a comfortable grip, making it ergonomic to handle and the soft shape would make it pleasant to carry in a pocket.

The first step was to explore the visual aspects of these water drops. I started sketching and experimenting with different shapes, aiming to replicate the fluidity and elegance of the water's surface. The result was a sleek and curved flask design that mimicked the gentle curves and reflections found in those small droplets.

Very easy to draw on paper, but how to create this seemingly simple shape into a 3D CAD file that could later be use for production. The solution was to use a tool in my CAD program called PolyNurbs. After adjusting the PolyNurbs object into the desired shape, I then needed more control of the transition from the body of the flask to the neck. This was achieved using a lofted surface, and the cap was made by revolving a profile.

I then sent my CAD file to my favorite 3D printing company, Prototal/Damvig, and as always, they printed out the model in no time with exceptional quality. The model was a pleaser to see and to have in my hands.

The next big step was to find someone to produce the hip flask, and for that I needed some nice presentation renderings. Using KeyShot and with some inspiration from Will Gibbons tips & tricks, I put together a few nice renderings.

Today, the modern hip flask called Lara, is on the market and is not just a vessel for carrying your favorite beverages; it's a work of art that captures the beauty of nature in a functional form.

It is a container for liquid, inspired by liquid, and it reminds us that inspiration is all around us, waiting to be harnessed to create something unique.
