NovoPen® 4

Insulin injection system with replaceable insulin cartridges.

Steve McGugan Industrial Design was again chosen to help Novo Nordisk in developing the next generation of re-usable insulin pens. The design requirements where to improve the already successful NovoPen® 3, the flagship product of the Novo Nordisk insulin delivery device line.  In 2005 Novo Nordisk launched the next generation of NovoPen®.  With a 3 times larger dose scale and a more compact and minimalistic design, this makes the new NovoPen® 4  the most compact insulin pen in the world.  NovoPen® 4 comes in 2 different colors which allows the user to have a different color NovoPen® for each type of insulin they use.

The design was made in close collaboration with the engineers and graphic designers at Novo Nordisk & Designit.

NovoLet ® 3 ml ReDesign

NovoLet ® 1.5ml

Launched in 1989, NovoLet® was the world's first pre-filled disposable insulin injection system. Until then, all insulin was injected using either a vial and syringe or a insulin pen with replaceable insulin cartridges.

Today more than one million people have used more than 250 million NovoLet® pre-filled pens.
NovoLet® was designed for people wanting or needing a simple insulin injection system.
The NovoLet® was given a face lift in 1999, maintaining it's simplicity.

NordiFlex PenMate™

The NordiFlex PenMate™ was designed to help children, as well as adults, that have needle phobia when using an injection device.

My design goal was to create a PenMate™ that was as compact and user friendly as possible, as well as creating a solution that would give the user the possibility to introduce their own design element into the device, making it a  more personal product.
The cap is designed to first and foremost protect the growth hormone from light.
The cap has a second design feature which is an outer transparent cover that can be snapped off.  The user can print out any photo or graphic pattern they desire from a normal printer.
The print is then cut to the right size and inserted into the transparent cover.

The cover with print is then snapped together with the inner cap and the user has personalized their NordiFlex PenMate™.

The device is used together with the disposable NordiFlex growth hormone pen and helps to hide and insert the needle quickly and painlessly during an injection.
